Astaxanthin
A red carotenoid from microalgae, and one of the strongest antioxidants in skincare, helping defend skin against oxidative stress from UV and pollution.
Haematococcus pluvialis extract, astaxanthine
Ageing skin · Dull skin
What it does
Astaxanthin is an aquatic carotenoid (it gives salmon its pink colouring) that can help protect the skin from oxidative damage. Red in colour, astaxanthin can help fight free radical damage and oxidation, making it a popular skincare ingredient.
How it works
Astaxanthin can help slow the visible effects of ageing thanks to its ability to neutralise free radicals, which damage skin cells. It isn’t a physical barrier, but it sits within cell membranes and helps defend them against the oxidative stress caused by UV and pollution. Early research suggests it can also help skin look smoother and more supple.
MG says
Astaxanthin has one of the strongest antioxidant profiles of all the carotenoids, so it earns its place in serums built for protection. The astaxanthin in skincare usually comes from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis rather than from seafood. Look for it in a morning antioxidant serum under SPF, such as CosMedix Elite Pepoxide, which pairs it with superoxide dismutase and spin trap among 16 antioxidants.
Cautions
Generally well tolerated. Antioxidants complement daily SPF but never replace it.
