Bisabolol

A calming compound found in chamomile that soothes sensitive skin and helps other ingredients absorb.

What it does

Found in the chamomile flower, bisabolol is a popular soothing ingredient, helping the skin stay comfortable and calm. Most cosmetic bisabolol is now distilled from the Brazilian candeia tree or made in the laboratory, rather than extracted from chamomile.

How it works

Bisabolol helps calm the look of redness and irritation, which is why it is so often paired with actives that can sensitise the skin. It also helps other ingredients penetrate the skin, which makes it a useful supporting player in creams, serums and body care.

Bisabolol is one of the key calming components of chamomile essential oil, in a purer, more concentrated form. It is one of the soothing ingredients to look for when skin is sensitive or reactive, and you’ll find it in Augustinus Bader The Body Cream, a buttery formula that penetrates in a flash so you can get dressed immediately.

Cautions

Bisabolol is very well tolerated. Chamomile-derived ingredients can rarely affect people allergic to the daisy family (such as ragweed), so patch test if that applies to you.
