    What it does

Calendula flowers are known for their soothing properties, allowing the skin to be nourished and hydrated while also calming the look of redness and irritation. It is a gentle choice for dry, sensitive and easily irritated skin, and is often infused into oils and balms.

    How it works

Rich in carotenoids, which give the petals their colour, and in soothing plant compounds called triterpenoids, calendula comforts irritated skin and helps nourish it. Helping moisturise dry skin is one of the most common uses of calendula, thanks to the ingredient’s ability to hold moisture.

    MG says

I love calendula oil, which is made by infusing the petals of the pot marigold in a plant oil and is quite sticky in texture. For sensitive, reactive skin, a calendula-infused oil is a gentle choice; just make sure it’s free from irritating essential oils and synthetic fragrance.

    Cautions

Calendula belongs to the daisy family, so patch test first if you react to related plants such as chamomile, ragweed or chrysanthemums.
