Coenzyme Q10

An antioxidant the skin makes naturally, and makes less of with age; in skincare it helps protect against free-radical damage.

CoQ10, ubiquinone, ubiquinol, Co-Enzyme Q10

    What it does

Coenzyme Q10 occurs naturally within the body, where it helps cells produce energy, and as an antioxidant it helps neutralise the free radicals that UV and pollution generate. When applied topically, coenzyme Q10 can give the appearance of firmer and healthier skin.

    How it works

Laboratory studies suggest it may support collagen and elastin and help skin cells cope with oxidative stress, though the evidence in skin is modest. It is a coenzyme rather than an enzyme: a helper molecule that enzymes need to do their work. The skin’s levels fall with age and sun exposure, which is why it is added to anti-ageing and eye products.

    MG says

Coenzyme Q10 is referred to as a network antioxidant, meaning it works to replenish or enhance the activity of other antioxidants. So it works best as part of a team: look for it alongside vitamins C and E, under your daily SPF. Auteur Definitive Eye Cream includes it for the delicate eye area.

    Cautions

Coenzyme Q10 is generally well tolerated. It can give formulas a yellow-orange tint, which is normal. Patch test first if your skin is sensitive.
