What it does
Rich in compounds called ginsenosides, ginseng root extract has antioxidant properties that help revitalise dull, tired-looking skin. It is often found in creams or serums, and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and dark spots. Most skincare uses Panax ginseng root; 'Siberian ginseng' (eleuthero), found in some Valmont mists, is a different plant.
How it works
Laboratory studies suggest ginsenosides help protect skin cells from oxidative stress and support collagen, and ginseng is traditionally used to invigorate the complexion. In skincare, the result is skin that looks brighter, fresher and more even.
MG says
Ginseng can help promote more youthful-looking skin by protecting it from ageing free radicals. You'll find it in Augustinus Bader The Face Cream Mask, where ginseng and pomegranate extracts sit alongside vitamin C and hyaluronic acid; leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, or overnight, when dry skin looks tired.
Cautions
Ginseng extract is generally well tolerated in skincare. As with any botanical extract, patch test first if your skin is reactive.
