What it does
Jojoba oil is a golden liquid wax extracted from the jojoba bean, and a popular ingredient in natural moisturisers. In contemporary skincare, jojoba is most commonly used to support the skin’s barrier and help it hold on to moisture, with the added benefit of being calming and soothing. Because it is light and very stable, it suits most skin types, including oily and sensitive skin.
How it works
The wax esters in jojoba closely resemble those in the skin’s own sebum, the oil it produces to help protect itself. It helps support the barrier, leaving a light, non-greasy film that helps the skin retain moisture. It is also a popular carrier oil, blended with other oils and oil-soluble actives in face oils, balms and cleansers, and its wax is used to make jojoba esters and the fine jojoba beads found in gentle scrubs.
MG says
Because it mimics the skin’s natural sebum, jojoba is one of the oils I suggest for oily and blemish-prone skin, used sparingly (just a few drops at night), and it suits sensitive skin too. It is also high in the formula of Augustinus Bader The Face Oil, a mainstay in my vanity that we often use in the treatment room as a massage medium or finishing product.
Cautions
Jojoba is generally well tolerated and unlikely to clog pores, but no oil suits everyone: patch test if your skin is reactive, and use it sparingly on oily or blemish-prone skin. For sensitive skin, choose blends without added fragrance or essential oils, which can irritate.
