Lanolin

A rich, semi-occlusive emollient from sheep's wool that softens and seals in moisture on very dry, chapped skin.

What it does

A popular ingredient for oil-rich balms and protectants, lanolin provides rich, lasting moisture to the skin. It is derived from wool and is a popular emollient, combating dryness and locking in moisture.

How it works

Thanks to its semi-occlusive barrier, lanolin helps prevent water loss and lock in hydration when applied topically. It helps promote softer, smoother skin, and its waxy esters resemble some of the lipids in human sebum, which makes it a good match for very dry, chapped skin.

MG says

Lanolin is one of the occlusives that give the most intense moisturisation, so keep it for very dry or compromised skin, lips and hands; oily or breakout-prone skin rarely needs it.

Cautions

Lanolin is a known contact allergen for some people, so patch test first, and avoid it if you have reacted to wool-derived products. Being heavy and occlusive, it can clog pores in oily or breakout-prone skin.
