Lemon Balm

What it does

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is celebrated for its antioxidant and soothing properties. It is also commonly used as a brightening ingredient. A member of the mint family, its leaf extract is a gentle supporting ingredient in radiance and soothing formulas.

How it works

Lemon balm is rich in rosmarinic acid and also contains caffeic and ferulic acids, antioxidants that help protect cells from the oxidative stress caused by sun exposure, pollution and environmental aggressors. It also contains flavonoids, which add to its antioxidant and soothing effect.

Lemon balm is a supporting botanical rather than a hero. You'll find it in Valmont's radiance-focused Lumi range, such as LumiSence serum and LumiCream, as one of a blend of herbal extracts that includes mallow, peppermint and yarrow.

Cautions

Lemon balm extract is generally gentle, but the essential oil is rich in citral, a known fragrance allergen, so never apply the pure oil to skin. If you're sensitive to fragrance, patch test products that contain it.
