What it does
Liquorice root extract is championed for its calming and soothing properties. It functions as an antioxidant and as a brightening agent, helping to even out the look of skin tone. Brightening properties aside, it is commonly found in skincare for dry, sensitive or reactive skin.
How it works
Liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhetinic acid (often listed as dipotassium glycyrrhizate), which help calm the look of redness and irritation. This makes it a staple of formulas for sensitive, reactive skin. Liquorice also contains glabridin and liquiritin, which have been studied for their effect on the look of uneven tone and dark spots.
MG says
Liquorice root extract can help with a multitude of skin concerns, from sensitivity to uneven tone. It is also one of the actives in the Cosmelan depigmentation peel we offer in the studio. If pigmentation appears during pregnancy, check with your doctor, midwife or pharmacist before starting any brightening product; vitamin C, niacinamide and azelaic acid are the brighteners most often suggested.
Cautions
Liquorice root extract is generally well tolerated, including by sensitive skin. If you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, check with your doctor, midwife or pharmacist before using liquorice or other brightening products. Wear SPF daily while working on pigmentation.
