What it does
Most commonly found in micellar water for makeup removal, micelles are gentle on the skin while providing a thorough cleanse. They don’t strip the skin and leave it feeling supple and hydrated.
How it works
Micellar water is made by dissolving mild cleansing molecules (surfactants) in water, where they cluster into tiny spheres called micelles, each with an oil-loving centre and a water-loving surface. When used on skin, the micelles grip onto makeup, dirt or other impurities and break them free, cleansing the face. The light texture leaves little residue, but the cleansing agents stay on the skin unless rinsed, so follow with a second cleanse.

Micellar water makes an easy first cleanse to dissolve makeup and SPF before a second cleanse, and a few swipes on a cotton pad is ideal for refreshing the skin on a long-haul flight, avoiding plane tap water. For a micellar, I like Bioderma Sensibio H2O.
Cautions
Micellar water is gentle, but it is designed to be followed by a second cleanse or a rinse, especially if you're prone to breakouts. Some contain fragrance, so choose a fragrance-free formula for sensitive skin, and press rather than rub around the eyes.
