    What it does

A provitamin of vitamin B5, panthenol is a great moisturising ingredient, and provides lasting hydration which can help combat dry and dull skin.

Gentle enough for sensitive skin, it also soothes the look of dryness and irritation, and it is used in haircare for the same reason, helping hair hold on to moisture.

    How it works

Panthenol is mainly a humectant: it draws water into the outer layers of the skin, where it is converted to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), and helps reduce water loss, supporting the barrier. It also has a soothing effect that can help calm the look of irritated, dry or red skin.

    MG says

Pair panthenol with hyaluronic acid in a hydrating serum when skin is red or reactive: B vitamins are among the ingredients that consistently suit sensitive, redness-prone skin. For a stressed complexion, Augustinus Bader The Ultimate Soothing Cream combines it with shea butter and evening primrose oil.

    Cautions

Panthenol is very well tolerated and suits most skin types, including sensitive skin. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, so patch test if you're very reactive.
