Phytic Acid
A gentle, large-molecule exfoliating acid from grains and seeds that also acts as an antioxidant; suits sensitive skin.
phytic acid, inositol hexaphosphate, IP6, sodium phytate
Sensitive skin · Texture & large pores · Dull skin
What it does
Phytic acid is a great exfoliant for those with sensitive skin or a lower tolerance to traditional exfoliators. Found in cereals and seeds, phytic acid is an antioxidant acid that provides gentle resurfacing, loosening dead skin cells to make way for a radiant complexion.
How it works
Helping to even out skin texture and the look of minor blemishes, phytic acid exfoliates gently to refine the skin’s surface and tone. It is also a chelator, binding metals such as iron and copper. That gives it antioxidant power, and because tyrosinase, the enzyme behind pigment, relies on copper, it often supports brightening formulas.
MG says
If you find other acids a little too irritating, this might be the one for you. Its large molecule works slowly at the surface, making it a good alternative for those prone to sensitivity, and you'll find it in most of Biologique Recherche's Lotion P50 range, including the gentler P50W.
Cautions
Gentle as it is, phytic acid is still an acid: introduce it slowly and don't layer it with other exfoliants or retinoids on the same night. Like other exfoliating acids, it can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and for a week after use. If you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding, check with your doctor, midwife or pharmacist before using it.
