    What it does

Pressed from the seeds of wild rose fruits, rosehip oil is rich in essential fatty acids and provides ample nourishment to the skin. Its fatty acids soften the skin and support its barrier, helping it look plumper and more supple. Used generously and consistently, it can also help keep skin supple as it stretches, which is why rosehip oil is a popular choice on the body in pregnancy, to help minimise the look of stretch marks.

    How it works

Rosehip oil is unusually rich in linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), with antioxidant vitamin E and carotenoids, including provitamin A beta-carotene, so it can nourish and protect the skin at the same time. Linoleic-rich oils are lighter than most, so rosehip suits oily and blemish-prone skin, where it can also help with the look of marks, as well as sensitive and mature skin. Claims that it contains natural retinoic acid are unproven, so it is no substitute for a retinoid.

    MG says

All skin types can benefit from rosehip oil as it's packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants. Press two to four drops onto the face, neck and décolletage as the last step of your evening routine, or mix a drop into your moisturiser in the morning; if your skin is oily, a few drops at night are enough.

    Cautions

Rosehip oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which oxidise quickly, so keep it in a dark, airtight bottle away from heat and light, and replace it if it smells rancid. It is generally well tolerated; if you’re prone to breakouts, patch test first. In pregnancy, choose a pure oil or a blend free of essential oils.
