Saccharide Isomerate

A plant-sugar humectant that binds to the skin's surface, so the hydration it brings lasts longer than most.

What it does

Saccharide isomerate is a humectant made from plant sugars, rearranged to resemble the carbohydrates found naturally in the skin's outer layer. It draws in and holds water, leaving skin softer, smoother and more comfortable, and it is gentle enough for sensitive skin. It is a quiet workhorse in many Biologique Recherche and Valmont formulas, and Victoria Beckham Beauty names it in its cleansers.

How it works

Many humectants sit loosely on the surface and are easily rinsed away. Saccharide isomerate is designed to bind to keratin, the protein of the outer skin cells, which is why it is described as longer-lasting than most. Victoria Beckham Beauty also calls it a prebiotic, meaning it feeds helpful skin microbes; that role is less established than its hydrating one. It layers well with hyaluronic acid, glycerin and NMF ingredients.

Auteur's Definitive Lifting Toner, which contains saccharide isomerate, is one I love mid-flight and after a treatment mask, to layer the skin with hydration. As with any humectant, follow with a moisturiser to seal that hydration in.

Cautions

Saccharide isomerate is generally very well tolerated, including by sensitive skin. As with any new product, patch test first if your skin is reactive.
