What it does
Soybean oil, listed on labels as Glycine soja (soybean) oil, is a light, nourishing plant oil pressed from soybeans. It is rich in fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, and is a natural source of vitamin E, with smaller amounts of plant sterols and lecithin. Despite the shared name, it is not the same as glycine, the amino acid, which appears separately on labels as 'glycine' in amino-acid blends.
How it works
As an emollient, soybean oil softens and smooths the skin and helps reduce water loss, while its linoleic acid supports the lipids of the skin's barrier. Its tocopherols (vitamin E) are antioxidants that help protect both the formula and the skin's surface from oxidative stress. It is a common base oil in creams, serums and body products, usually in a supporting role.
MG says
Soybean oil is a supporting emollient rather than a hero, so choose a formula for your skin type rather than for the oil itself. In Biologique Recherche's range it sits in gentle, barrier-supporting textures such as Emulsion Gel Biosensible, a lightweight gel for agitated, sensitised skin.
Cautions
Refined soybean oil is generally well tolerated. If you have a soy allergy, check labels and patch test first, or ask your doctor.
