    What it does

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a North American shrub whose leaves, bark and twigs give a soothing, astringent extract and a distilled water, both widely used in toners, mists and serums. With antioxidant properties, witch hazel can help soothe irritated-looking skin, and can also help reduce the look of shine.

    How it works

As an astringent, witch hazel is used in a skincare context to give a tightening feel and reduce the look of pores and shine. Due to high levels of tannins, when witch hazel is applied topically it can help refine and clarify the skin, as well as soften the look of redness. Extracts made from the bark and leaves are rich in these tannins; distilled witch hazel water contains far fewer, and many versions contain added alcohol.

    MG says

Most commonly known as an astringent, witch hazel can be used to reduce the appearance of pores and excess shine. It is also known for its ability to reduce the appearance of puffiness around the eyes and supply a rich source of polyphenols and antioxidants to the skin. For oily, combination or congested skin, choose an alcohol-free witch hazel toner, as alcohol-based versions can strip the skin.

    Cautions

Many witch hazel waters and toners contain added alcohol, which can dry and irritate sensitive skin, so choose alcohol-free versions. Witch hazel can occasionally cause irritation or allergy; patch test if your skin is reactive.
