This is a winter skincare guide from Broadsheet, published in June 2023, built around advice from Melanie Grant. It opens by pointing out that hot showers, baths and heaters are all hard on skin.

The article gives her background. She opened her first studio in Sydney in 2012 and a second in Melbourne in 2016, then expanded to Los Angeles, Paris and London. Her career spans more than two decades, and her clients include Cate Blanchett, Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, Lara Worthington and Nicole Warne. She became Chanel Australia's first official skin expert in 2016 and took the same role for Chanel US in 2019. Her first book, The Modern Guide to Skin Health, sets out her philosophy: eat the right foods and choose products suited to your age and lifestyle rather than using everything.

Winter, she says, is when many people need to adjust their routine. “During the colder months, our skin has to work even harder,” Grant tells Broadsheet, pointing to harsh weather, central heating and the shock of moving between the two. Beyond dryness, she sees redness, sensitivity, irritation and a weakened barrier. The piece explains that heating lowers humidity and the moisture available to skin, that people with eczema and psoriasis may flare, and that even people who rarely get dry skin can turn flaky, red and sore. It then moves on to her tips for moisturising, a night-time ritual and what to eat.
