LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy shines set wavelengths of red, near-infrared and blue light onto the skin to support repair, calm redness and clear breakouts. It is painless, needs no recovery time, and works best as a course of treatments rather than a one-off.

What does LED light therapy do?

LED (light-emitting diode) therapy uses non-thermal light to give skin cells more energy, which sets off their own repair processes. It doesn't heat or injure the skin, which is why it suits sensitive and inflamed skin that can't take more aggressive treatments.

Each colour reaches a different depth and does a different job. Red light at 633nm speeds repair and renewal, supports collagen, improves hydration and circulation, and brings back glow. Near-infrared at 830nm (often called white light) reaches deeper, calming redness and irritation and helping with pigmentation; Melanie usually pairs it with red. Blue light at 415nm kills the bacteria behind acne and settles inflammation.

How often should you have LED?

Results build with frequency. The ideal course is two treatments a week for five weeks, or one a week for ten weeks if that's easier to schedule. After that, weekly or monthly sessions keep the results going. Each session takes 10 to 20 minutes under the light, and many clients fall asleep.

Is there any downtime?

None. Some people feel a mild warmth for up to half an hour afterwards. As with any treatment, wear sun protection.

What is LED used with?

LED is often the last step of a facial, after a peel, resurfacing treatment or targeted serum, to strengthen the result. Because it supports healing, it also helps skin recover from more intensive work such as collagen induction therapy, PicoWay, Sublative and chemical peels.

Is an at-home LED mask worth it?

Yes, as maintenance between appointments, but not as a replacement. Home masks are less powerful than studio devices, so they work only with steady use. When you compare masks, check three things: that the wavelengths are stated (red around 630nm and near-infrared around 830nm, plus blue around 415nm if breakouts are the concern); that the device is listed with your regulator, such as the ARTG in Australia or FDA clearance in the US; and that it's a routine you'll keep up several times a week.
